Expenses contractors often forget

They qualify when they are incurred to earn your business income and you keep the receipts.

  • Mileage and truck use

With a logbook, the business share of your vehicle lowers your tax.

  • Small tools and safety gear

Tools, boots and protective equipment bought for work.

  • Phone and software

The business share of your phone, estimating and invoicing software.

  • Licences, permits and insurance

RBQ licence, professional dues and liability insurance.

  • Training

Courses and training related to your trade.

  • Equipment rental

Machinery, scaffolding or container rental for a job.

  • Office or shop

Rent, electricity, heating and insurance for the shop, or part of your home if you meet the conditions.

  • Accounting fees

Fees for your bookkeeping and tax returns are deductible.

Self-employed or corporation: which suits you?

Many contractors start out self-employed, then wonder whether they should incorporate.

A corporation can lower the tax on profits left in the business, but it costs more to run and adds returns.

We compare both scenarios with your real numbers: total tax, salary or dividends and running costs. You decide knowing what it changes.

Questions

How much do your services cost for a contractor?

Bookkeeping starts at $175 per month and the full package (bookkeeping, payroll and year-end) at $250 per month. For a fixed price, tell us how many bank accounts and credit cards the business has, the approximate number of transactions per month and the number of employees: we reply in writing.

When do I have to register for GST/QST?

Once your taxable sales go over $30,000 in a calendar quarter or over four consecutive calendar quarters. You can also register earlier to recover the tax you pay on your purchases.

Do I have to file a T5018 for my subcontractors?

If construction is your main activity and you pay subcontractors, the CRA generally requires a T5018 return. We check whether it applies to you and prepare it.

Do you handle payroll?

Yes: pay runs, source deductions, remittances to the CRA and Revenu Québec, and RL-1 and T4 slips at year-end.

Who prepares our year-end financial statements?

We prepare your year-end, and the financial statements are done with our partner CPA firm.
