Do I Need to Register for GST/QST in Quebec?

If you run a small business in Laval or anywhere in Quebec, one of the first tax questions you'll face is whether you need to register for GST (TPS) and QST (TVQ). Here's a plain-language overview.

The $30,000 threshold

In most cases you must register once your worldwide taxable revenue exceeds $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters. Below that, you're considered a "small supplier" and registration is optional — though voluntary registration can still make sense.

Why register voluntarily

Registering lets you recover the GST/QST you pay on business purchases, through input tax credits (ITCs) and input tax refunds (ITRs). For a business with significant startup costs or equipment purchases, that can add up quickly — sometimes enough to justify registering before you reach the threshold.

What registration involves

Once registered, you charge GST (5%) and QST (9.975%) on your taxable sales, file periodic returns (monthly, quarterly, or annually depending on your revenue), and remit the net tax to Revenu Québec, which administers both taxes in Quebec.

Every situation is a little different, especially with mixed or exempt supplies. If you're unsure whether or when to register, we can review your numbers and handle the registration for you.
